More Americans apply for UK citizenship than ever

The number of Americans applying for UK citizenship reached a record high in 2024, with political and financial factors driving the surge. More than 6,100 US citizens applied last year – 26% more than in 2023 – marking the highest figure since records began two decades ago. Overall, UK citizenship applications rose by 6% to a record 251,000.

According to Home Office data, the increase was particularly sharp in the final quarter of the year, when applications from US citizens jumped 40% yearonyear to around 1,700.

Immigration lawyers suggest two key factors behind the rise: Donald Trump’s return to power and changes to UK tax rules. Some Americans in Britain seek citizenship before they leave, while others may seek stability amid political uncertainty in the US.

To become a British citizen, applicants must meet certain criteria, including length of residence, family ties to the UK, or marriage to a British citizen.

Home Office figures show a steady rise in applications from US nationals since late 2022. This trend reflects shifting priorities for American expatriates as political and economic conditions influence migration patterns.

In September 1992 Patrick Shanahan retraced their steps, recording his 500 mile journey in a series of photographs, some of which are reproduced on this website.
